A
Baden-Powell Bibliography

"Books are like a gigantic treasure chest stuffed full of gold and precious stones
and pieces of eight – and a bit of nonsense too. It is tremendous fun exploring the chest
and deciding for yourself what is valuable and what isn’t, what you want to keep and what
you don’t like." — Baden-Powell, Wolf Cub Handbook (15th Edition), p. 162
"Books are the best
friends a man can have. You choose those that you like; you can rely on them at all times;
they can help you in your work, in your leisure, and in your sorrow. You have them always
around you at your beck and call in your home." — Baden-Powell, Rovering to Success (1922), p. 150.

About
Lazlo Nagy and 250 Million Scouts:
In 1985, Lazlo Nagy,
then Chief Executive of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, wrote 250 Million
Scouts as a history of the Scout Movement from its earliest days to the present. In the
early chapters the focus is on the "Founder," Sir Robert Baden-Powell. But the
unique contribution of the book is its perspective on the development of the Scout
Movement as a world organization. Nagy, himself, was a Scout as a boy in Hungary. Little
did he expect to be so thoroughly involved in Scouting and to cap a distinguished career
as leader of the World Organization.
250 Million Scouts was
published by the World Scout Foundation and Dartnell Publishers in 1985. The following is
the author’s profile as it appears in the book.
"Lazlo Nagy, the
author, is a Swiss citizen of Hungarian origin, a sociologist, historian and Doctor of
Political Science. A former journalist and the author of a number of books on current
politics, he undertook a two-year study of the International Scout Movement, financed by
the Ford Foundation. In 1968, on completion of the study, he was invited to put his
recommendations into practice and accepted the appointment of Chief Executive of the World
Organization of the Scout Movement. It was to have been a three-year assignment. Now, 17
years later and still in the job, this book 250 Million Scouts is the fruit of his unique
perspective."

Stevens Publishing of Kila, Montana has a
wonderful selection of reprints of many of B-P’s writings. These include, among others: Aids
to Scoutmastership, Lessons from the Varsity of Life, Memories of India
and My Adventures as a Spy. There are works about Scouting, about B-P’s first
career as a soldier, and about B-P’s views on both Scouting and life. They also publish
reprints of works by Ernest Thompson Seton and Dan Beard, two of the founders of the Boy
Scouts of America. They provide a unique source of information on the Founder in his own
words. |
