THE MIRACULOUS STAG A Letter from Dr. Jozsef Koszterszitz Editor, 1933 Jamboree Magyar Cserkész Newspaper of the 4th World Jamboree The miraculous stag is the sacred animal of Hungarian legend. It is the embodiment of old dreams which still live. We Hungarians were, and will continue to be a people chasing dreams. But you too, our Scout Brethren, all of you, are equally a generation of dream-chasers. Dreams and aspirations ran before us, calling and beckoning us on. They, however, move civilisation and history. If man could not dream, we should be still in the Stone Age. Prehistoric man first dreamt of the stone axe, then began to chase his dream, and so the thing became a reality. Though not quite so beautiful as he had dreamt it, he saw that it was good. It set history in motion. The young people of the Twentieth Century dream in a more grandiose style, yet they also set out to fulfil their dreams, to realise them. From all over the world, with accompanying rumble and clatter, hum and shriek, trains, ships, motorcars, aeroplanes, motor-bicycles and bicycles set forth, all converging on one spot of the earth’s surface: Godollo where they discharge their complements of young people. Six months ago you probably did not know that such a place as Godollo existed. And now you are here, and with all your heart and soul are helping to build the great Kingdom of Boyhood whose uncrowned king is the Chief Scout of the World. The Kingdom of Boyhood dreams, it dreams of Love, Friendship and Peace, in this Trinity embracing every soil in the world that every boy shall regard his neighbour as "Brother" and that they shall join together in the great mutual task. The grown-ups look upon them and smile. They ask: "What do you think you can do, you little simpletons? We were never further away from love, friendship and peace than we are to-day. Are you so foolish as to imagine that you can turn the world from its course and belie history?" The citizens of the Kingdom of Boyhood know that their dreams are true and that it is not the grown-ups who are right but they themselves. The Lord and Master of the Jamboree is the Trinity of Love, Friendship and Peace. For two whole weeks the thousands of boys who have come from every nook and corner of the globe will in their own city of tents, pitched in a forest and removed from everyday life, live out their most beautiful Scout Dream: a commonwealth in which reign mutual love, comradeship and peaceful labour in complele harmony And when the time comes for them to strike camp and return to their distant homes when trains, ships, motorcars, aeroplanes, motorcycles and bicycles hasten to scatter the thousaiids of boys to all points of the compass, their hearts will glow with the triumphant certainly that they at least created the ideal world society for two weeks. That has succeeded. And now we are going to do the same, slowly, on a grand scale, with millions. That will be beautiful. Not quite so beautiful as we dreamt it, but certainly more beautiful than anything the history of mankind has been able to show hitherto. Surely it is worth while working for! This is how you will all be chasing the miraculous stag, dreaming your dreams, our scout brethren. This forms the basis of the World Jamboree at Godollo. Welcome to the city of the miraculous stag! We will have such a glorious fortnight that our eyes will ever after flash with pleasure at the memory of it. Won’t you help to realise it? Jozsef Koszterszitz, Editor
